Hi Christine, Charcoal BBQ briquettes work well to absorb musty odors. Simply put a few in a paper bag or bowls around the old house and the charcoal will absorb much of the odor. I've used this throughout the years as a Realtor to get rid of musty smells in basements, closed off areas in homes. Baking soda helps too, but not as well as the charcoal briquettes. Just DO NOT buy the ones that have fire starter added...just plain charcoal works!
If you live in a humid area, you will need a dehumidifier. First you need to locate the source. I would also wash all the walls and have all the carpets professionally steam cleaned too.
Here's a great post on getting rid of musty smells in houses.
