How do I prepare a concrete porch for repainting?
I am cleaning my concrete porch to apply new paint. I used a handheld sander and got some paint off. I rinsed it off with a jet spray from my hose and more of the paint was coming off. Should I rent a power washer to try to get the rest of the paint off? I plan to use a primer and two coats of paint when the surface is ready. Thanks!

Before you can apply a concrete paint, clean it with degreasers to get rid of any oil or grease stains, followed by muriatic acid to remove any curing chemicals on the concrete's surface. (Muriatic acid is extremely dangerous if inhaled, and prolonged exposure can cause circulatory failure. Use caution and read all instructions before working with muriatic acid.) Seal the concrete with a primer-sealer product to prevent it from moisture retention before applying a concrete paint.
Hi, Elaine!
I would definitely remove the remaining paint before proceeding, and a power washer should work to remove most, if not all, of it. RustOleum also makes a paint remove for concrete that can be found here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-1-gal-Paint-Stripper-for-Concrete-310984/300274229 I hope this helps!
Yep power wash it to remove the paint. No need for muriatic acid. It's use to etch concrete for staining not painting.
Yes powerwash but first spray down with concrete cleaner..buy concrete paint with primer in it already makes job easier and apply 2-3 coats ..wait a day and apply concrete sealer
If it hasn't been painted already you will need to etch it with muriatic acid so that the cement paint you choose will really adhere. Be sure to wear protective clothes, gloves and glasses.
Then I would follow all the instructions carefully for whatever brand of concrete paint or stain you select.
