Yours look to have velvety nap so I don't know if it would get stiff from paint. Maybe try it on the under side first. Your will need to tape the frame alot to keep the wood finish. So recovering could be faster. But an advantage of painting is that latex paint helps repeal water and food stains.

Sure, just cover the fabric very well and then paint over the wood. If you plan on keeping the chairs for a while I suggest you remove the panels with the fabric first. Decide on the color you would like for the wooden part of the chair, and then remove the paint that's already there. They look like they have already been painted so it might be a bit of chore. They are pretty though, so it might be worth the trouble. If it was my project, after removing the paint and cleaning, sanding, etc, I would just find a stain that I liked and stain it and then coat with a sealer. The fun part is the replacing the spongy part and finishing with a new fabric. I might choose a dark velvet or leather if the stain is pretty dark. Or maybe a light stain and pastelish fabric for the bedroom. You are going to have fun and be so happy with yourself when finished. I've seen pink and lavendar leather even when out window shopping. : ) Enjoy your project!!! And forget about the critics. Irma
