A flat paint (no sheen) might be enough. If there’s no shine it’s more difficult to see flaws. :)
Does it matter? It's the garage . . . I always use a satin or gloss paint that is washable for ease of maintenance. Much easier to dust a slick wall or ceiling. No one notices your garage ceiling but you.

Thanks for the imput. I did purchase the silica additive at Lowes. I was just wondering if their was a more economical hack.
There's a spray that you can use that's made for drywalls and ceilings that help to create a texture look before you paint it. I believe it's in the paint section at Home Depot and Lowe's.
I will have to check for that. I did find a product at Lowe's that is a texture medium that you mix with your paint. Not looking forward to doing a 30x32 garage ceiling. Thanks for the info!
