Did you clean and prime before painting? That does help the paint job last longer. Clay pots will always peel eventually, just due to climate, exposure and water.
Marianne, clay is porous. Moisture will continue to migrate through the clay. When the moisture gets to the waterproof barrier of the paint, it will bubble then peal. Using a masonry stain will help because it doesn't stop the moisture from migrating.
You can also try using a topcoat. Just make sure it’s one for outdoor use.
WE USED TO USE AN ORDINARY EXTERIOR LATEX ON OUTSIDE CONCRETE WALLS SO THERE IS NO REASON WHY IT WOULD NOT WORK ON CLAY POTS.
It's the type of paint you use. You need an exterior paint.
