There are weed and feed fertilizers which come in granular form. Some need to be watered in and others not. Do not apply in the hot sun or you may burn your grass. I have used it and it works really well to get rid of weeds and feed the lawn so that it becomes thick and green.
I use Spectracide Weed and Feed in the hose end sprayer. No mixing, no mess. Kills the weeds and feeds the lawn. A thicker lawn leaves no room for weeds.

Scotts Weed n Feed using a lawn spreader to broadcast the granules. Usually done in the spring and fall.
