I spray my plants with Dawn and water either early in the am before the sun hits them or late evening after it's gone down. Make sure you get under the leaves and stems as well.
A botanist I follow recommends using Dr Bronners to make a soap spray. A few squirts of Dr Bronners castile soap in a spray bottle of water. Spray on the underside of the leaves.
My used to just toss dish water out over the plants when she finished washing dishes.
