I have them in my yard. Installed by the builder when the area was developed. Still there all these years later.

Railroad ties work very well for a garden edge. I used them for my 60 ft. by 12 ft. garden.
You can and they look great, but they also can leach chemicals into your soil so it's not recommended for food gardens.
