Wire shelving with standards that screw to wall studs and brackets that snap into them are an easy option for shelving. Plus, they can be reconfigured any time down the road as needs change. The basics are brackets to support the shelf. I've found wire shelves for very little. My favorite was one that was intended for a laundry room with a she!f, and a bracket you could hang clothes from.
Home Depot has finished shelves (laminated) in various sizes. They also have cute supports. Measure it out the length. Have an idea of the width you want and head over there.
You can stack plastic or wooden crates in your closet if you are unable to build shelving.
