Use Hardboard or MDF sheets from DIY's. Nail at back of treads to secure.

Are you sure you want to close it in? It becomes more difficult to move large items (furniture, mattresses, etc.) when the stairwell is closed in, especially if there's a turn in it. (Ask me how I know!)
