    Hi Christine,

You could paint straight on top with Chalk paint and then give it a Clear or Antique wax finish, or Paint on ESP and then undercoat and Topcoat using a satin finish, or go the traditional way. Rub down to remove the original surface, Prime, Undercoat and then Topcoat. The choice is yours....... Best wishes.

I would probably sand them a little then prime and paint. If you are painting the top of the table be sure to give it a couple of coats of a clear coat that can be wiped down. Sounds like a fun project. Good luck!

Chalk paint is the way to go! No sanding required!

You will want to strip the current finish, repair (if needed), sand, clean, prime, and paint. Make sure you are going to use a highly durable paint because tables get much more abuse than other types of painted furniture. I think that is why you see so many tables that are dual finish with stain on the flat surface and painted chairs & table base/legs. Refresh the hardware or replace it is well.
