What is the surface now? Concrete?
Any overlay is going to need a foundation. First work on the extension (and any issues you have with the current patio) so your overlay will go on smoothly.
You will need to extend the are first making sure that you have a good foundation that is even with the current patio. Then, depending on material, you will go forward with the overlay.
Please tell us what your existing pad foundation is. Please us what your desired patio overlay finish is. This is a really wide question.
Your “foundation” for the extension needs to be on level, compacted dirt- keeping in mind your finished product needs to have a slight slope away from the house, so that it drains.
It needs to be impervious to erosion along the edges.
If we’re talking about a concrete pad, then that’s going to require a pro helper, based on your question.
