Just install a flooring transition strip between the two different materials. Take a photo to the flooring department of your home improvement store and ask them to suggest the best kind.

You don't say how much higher. Transition strips will work if only a little higher. Any more than 1/4" then you would need to tile, slate, or any stone product on top of the slate. You can also remove the slate, raise the floor and reapply the slate.
