Here's a few tips for you Carol! I like Minwax stain followed by a clear poly finish applied with a lambswool applicator for a smooth finish.

I love Minwax Polyshades. It is a stain and poly in one. I have used the brush on and the spray and I love them both. I think a fairly fine sand paper will do the job before you stain. Then a light sanding afterward to make it feel smooth. Good luck.
I find using a stain and poly in one covers up too much of the grain and looks globby. Best to use stripper to remove old finish, wash it clean with lacquer thinner then sand progressing up to 220 grit. Always sand with the grain. Use a gel stain and do 2 coats of oil based polyurethane.
