This is a problem I've dealt with. Unfortunately it often wicks into the padding under the carpet so just surface clean won't get it all. Enzyme products help. You need to remove it all or they will use the same spot. My daughter had a professional clean hers, and it got rid of the stains and odors. Since I didn't go that route, I used enzyme product like Pets N Kids, surface cleaned with vinegar and baking soda or Resolve spray and followed up with a Bissell cleaning product used in a steam cleaner that was for pet stains.
I have had at least four dogs and a few cats over the years. Best thing I found is Clorox Urine-Gone. Blot up as much urine as possible, then saturate the spot with Urine-Gone. When it dries, no stain, no odors! Good luck.
