You could try using chalk paint. You can get chalk paint at Amazon and Walmart. Just lightly hand sand the table and use a cleaner like Krud Kutter before painting.

I lightly sanded mine down, then restained with a darker stain. Used Poly 4 coats, lightly sanding in between. Looks great.
If you paint your table top with chalk paint you should use polyurathane as a final sealer. Water based poly will not yellow.
