If you like the table and it is varnished... you can use Minwax refinisher and tung oil. It will remove the dirty and sticky finish . The stain remains and rub on tung oil.
If you need to clean an old dirty table and dont want to refinish. Try Bio Green Clean ( through mail order) I used it on an old oak sewing table. It cleaned the table up so well,removing the gunk (varnish remained) that I did not need to refinish. Just clean and buff. I'm glad I did the cleaning first!
