Are you going over another stain? Factory finish? Paint? Do a test on the back of a finished lower cabinet. Not all finishes are compatible with each other. Sometimes they won't dry, some peel, some scratch off easily and make sure the top coat is also compatible too. Lots of time the water based poly will not hold up over the factory finished lacquer used on cabinets. Be careful.

Hi Diane! Gel stain is very user friendly to work with! I would lightly sand cabinets with 220 grit and wipe clean of any dust. Clean cabinets with TSP. My favorite gel stain is General Finishes. Use a foam brush to apply. Seal with high performance topcoat. :) Here is General finishes link!

Take one of the drawers or door fronts to the paint dept. of your home improvement store and ask for their advice on paints, stains and application tools. They have the best products and know-how to do a great job.
