Hi Linda,
This is for an antique chest - it doesn't specifically state hope chest. This would be a similar method, but some of the details of your hope chest may be different. I hope this help you. Wishing you the best.

You can choose to strip off the old finishes of your hope chest and then stain it a new color and add a finish coat of poly. You could paint it with chalk paint and distress it if you like that look and finish with a coat of wax or poly. Here's a few inspirational ideas for you from Pinterest!

I have a client who has a really old wood burl covered hope chest that was very dull and dryed out looking. So I used this for unvarnished wood.... https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Products-FW0016-Feed-N-Wax-Conditioner/dp/B001BKQYGW/ref=sr_1_2?crid=WQHJ4EKK6LKC&keywords=beeswax+furniture+oil&qid=1568053200&s=gateway&sprefix=furniture+oil+with+beeswax%2Caps%2C535&sr=8-2 I also used it on a neglected butchblock in the pantry and WOW both look great.
