Depending on the size of area, I use cardboard over the winter. On smaller areas, try brown paper bags. Just be sure there isn’t any ink on them so as to not contaminate the soil.

The Truth About Natural Weed Killer Exposed
Hi Jennifer,
I have tried the vinegar, dawn and salt and didn't have much luck. For me, I have used the boiling water for fast results (great for poison ivy) and then I lay a tarp down late fall through winter and that covers a larger area. I have taken the grill over to where the weeds are and boiled multiple pots of water at one time. Plus, I am not walking across the lawn with boiling water.
Good Luck
