Which kind of paint should I use to make over my Formica countertops?
We have older Formica on the countertops in our kitchen and I am wanting to update them-and better match my decor-but I’m not sure how to do it or what kind of paint to use. Can you give me some advice/tips, please? Thank you!

Hi Sharon, they make countertop painting kits that I've heard really good things about. Here's one blogger her used on of them in her own kitchen: https://inmyownstyle.com/painting-kitchen-countertops.html
HI Sharon,
You don't need a kit to paint a countertop. I do suggest if you want to do a faux granite or marble look that you practice on a piece of wood or tile before you start. The faux granite look is easy. First clean the countertop well using TSP. Let it dry then use a good primer and let that dry too. Next do a coat of "back" paint. I used gray. After that dried, I used pieces of sponge to dab on colors - black, white, dark gray, light gray and gold. You can choose your own colors. Dab with each color, mixing them up (see the website below for more instructions.) Once you have the look you like, use 3-5 coats of sealer for the best protection.
Check that sealer every year to see if it needs an extra coat. You will have to be careful with this countertop. Do not put anything hot on it without a thick mat because most sealers will not stand up to heat. Also be sure to always use a cutting board. If you take those steps, it should look good for a long time. Just know, though that this is considered a temporary fix and won't hold up as long as a new countertop will. The better you prep and take care of that countertop, the longer it will last. People have had theirs last for years. It will give you time though to save up for a countertop replacement. :) Wishing you the best.

Hi Sharon, I used a melamine paint on mine and it lasted over 10 years, I here's how I did it, hope it helps you out,
Lightly sand to rough the countertop up
Go to your paint store, tell them what you are painting, they will pick the proper paint and primer for you, you can even get the primer tinted for a better coverage
Once you have sanded, clean with TSP, then rinse and dry thoroughly,
Apply your primer coat, let it dry according to the instructions
Once the primer coat is dry, apply your paint coat, I would apply 2 or 3 as it will be stronger and thicker
Once your coats dry, you can apply a matte clear coat, either by spray or roll on, keep a small container of it under your sink for touch ups, (I never touched up) I had my counters like this for 12 years, until I could afford new ones.
I used a few uncolored glass cutting boards for protection. It held up very well. And only costs you the prices of the materials.
Good luck!
