I have old large picture frames too and plan to put contact paper inside the back to look like "wood" then add holiday cheers. For example add "Welcome to our Home" in two or three lines stenciled or store sticker letters on the top half. On the bottom half I will add the seasonal wreath, like small fall wreath for fall, holly bush wreath or greenery and red balls wreath for Christmas, etc. I will change the wreath as each season passes. I may do some in red truck designs or even snowmen on the "wood" back ground. I will be making these soon. Hope this helps you now for ideas.
Create a gallery wall! Do they have glass & matting? If not, you can use them to frame something other than a photo on the wall, like this:
You can hang several small frames and then put a large frame around the assorted small ones. Or you could hang 3 small mirrors and then put a large frame on its side to enclose the mirrors. Or you could staple chicken wire to the back of a big frame and use it to hang your jewelry.
I've seen folks making a wall succulent garden in them and they look awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb9RPHmnxFM
Carol -- paint it a funky color and put a cork board (or cork tiles) in it!
