Great question because this is absolutely the sort of thing I need to do myself! After doing a bit of research, I found a video and a couple of articles ( here and here) that may be helpful. I hope this helps!
There are foam cleaners made just for air conditioners. They are available online at places like Walmart and Amazon. I vacuum mine first, to get the loose dust. I loosen it first with a soft bristle brush using care not to bend the metal fins. Frost King makes a good spray cleaner.
There is also a removable and washable filter on the front of the ac. This should be washed in the tub or sink every month. Every time I stay in a hotel room, I do this too. It takes about 2 minutes
