I would attach curtains to ceiling to make the canopy.
Some people hang a hoola hoop over their bed and put sheer curtains on it (one cut needed to string the sheers onto the hoop until it is covered all the way around. Then they just pull the sheers out to the edge of the bed. it is romantic!
I have one over my bed. It is at least 20 years old. My husband constructed the "corona" and made sure it is fastened to studs in the ceiling. The curtain is a sheer fabric, very full. The little pointy trim at the top are small napkins cut in half. They is also a lace trim on the front of the curtains which are very long. I wash the curtain about once a year. Velcro holds it in place inside the corona.
