I know it as a California patch. I use the method for small holes. Larger holes need wood back bracing and fiberglass mash tape.
I think the butterfly approach means leaving paper that covers the hole. Cut the patch larger than the hole and remove excess sheetrock so it will fit in the hole. Then use sheetrock mud to attach the paper to the wall and then spread mud over the entire patch. Add texture and paint as needed.
