Aging and Weathering Wood Using Steel Wool and Vinegar
You will just need to soak a piece of steel wool in vinegar for 24 hours in an air tight container. Then you can just wipe or paint onto the wood.
Put steel wool in a Mason Jar (or other container and pour in white vinegar until it covers the steel wool and allow the steel wool to dissolve. Using fine steel wool (#0000j will make it dissolve faster. Do not seal the container. This is very important because the chemical reaction will cause it to bubble as it releases gas. If you put a lid on the Mason Jar pressure will build and the jar will burst. This process will take several days. When it’s mostly dissolved strain it into another container through a paint strainer, cheese cloth, coffee filter, or other fine mesh. Apply the stain to the wood with a brush, rag, or whatever you prefer. When it goes on it will look like it’s not doing anything. As it sits the wood will darken into a beautiful grayish brown color. Depending on the wood it might feel very ‘grainy’. I usually just wipe it with a rag and it comes right off. I’ve never tried to put a topcoat over it so I don’t know how a finishing agent will work over the vinegar.
