If you can, get rid of the wall between and make a bar counter with stools. The room will feel more open and the family can talk to those in the kitchen and feel more connected.
Add windows, skylights, and/or bay seating windows for more seating area and light to make the room more inviting.
If you want a tv, mount a flat one that can be used as digital art for parties or meals.
Hi Damaris,
If you have a picture that would help. But I like the idea mentioned above to remove the wall. Make sure to consult with a contractor or engineer to make sure the wall isn't load bearing. You could also build in a pantry for more storage options if needed. Enjoy the project.
If you are planning to put a TV in this new family room I would encourage you to keep all its walls. As sound travels quickly, you may want the sound to be contained in the one area rather than having it interfer with other activities in the kitchen or rest of the home.
7' x 9' is not going to give you much room for any large furniture.
Consider multi functional or convertible pieces with built in storage, that can be moved around somewhat to accommodate increased number of persons or different activities.
My mom made my old tiny bedroom into a TV room in our Carmel Comstock home. It was just the TV on one side on a behind the sofa table 12" depth, but nowdays I would hang on the wall. And she put a down love seat on the other side for viewing and a coffee table to stick up your feet. Loved that down sofa when I would visit it was my fav. place to hang (like hitting a feather bed).
If your worried about sound you could add a sound bar to the TV and put it on the floor.
Hi Damaris, you could put a small storage sofa, a wall mount TV and a nesting tables to use when using the room. Small area rub for a dab of color?
Hello. This may depend on your familys ages size and needs. A small loveseat and TV might be a good start you could always have overhead lighting or wall-mounted lamps and depending upon your family for cushions or beanbags.
A lot depends on the age of your family members for appropriate suggestions. Hope this helps
