Hi Joe. It needs to be secured into wall studs. You could also add a french cleat to the back of the cabinet, the other half into the studs, then just hang.

I agree with Karen, the cabinets need to be mounted into the wall studs-these are the backbones of the walls. Depending on what you have in your cabinets, I would go with the studs only just to be safe.
A properly installed cabinet is screwed into the stud using brass colored drywall screws that are appr 2.5 inches long (depending on the wall and cabinet thickness) and then the face frames are screwed to the cabinet next to it with smaller screws
Sounds like whoever mounted them to start with DIDN'T mount them into the studs behind the wall. Get a stud-finder & find the studs. THEN, attach them using screws, at least 2 screws per side, to the studs.
