There are many headboards you can make yourself that don't have to attach to the wall. I made my own headboard and attached it to the metal bed frame. It doesn't even touch the wall. There are usually mounting plates on one end of a metal bed frame that you can use to attach the frame to a headboard. You can either make your own or purchase a used headboard from thrift shops, rummage sales, etc. and spiff them up to your liking! Here's some ideas!

Hi Charlotte,
Fix the headboard to the bed. At the head of the bed there should be to areas of screw fixings. If your headboard does not have the struts on already, you can buy them quite cheaply - even online on eBay etc. Best wishes. PS: The struts slide between the bed and the screw fixing. To secure tighten them up.......
Make your headboard...lean it on the wall and push your bed up against it. It doesn't take screws or nails...the weight of the bed holds it in place. We have had our headboard for 25 years that way and is still in place.
Here is a link for headboards for you to consider.
Hope this helps

Do a vinyl wall sticker, which can be removed with no damage to the wall.
