How do I refinish an IKEA desk?
I have an IKEA desk that my nieces decided to paint all over. I would like to refinish this and take it down to the bare wood and re-stain. Can it be done?

Hi Christy,
It depends. A lot of IKEA furniture is made with compressed wood chips between plastic (like a laminate) so it's not stainable wood. The first step would be to find out exactly if it's made of solid wood or their usual processed wood chips. Here's an article that might help you figure out if it's solid wood so you can stain it or if it's "fake" wood and needs to be painted. Wishing you the best.

Depends on the Ikea. some is wood and some is pressed board. Can you tell what it is made of?
It depends on the desk. I haven't seen any wood desks from there in a while, so I would guess that it's probably laminate, not wood.
