The walls were treated with something 20 years ago, I was thinking to dilute a water based latex and just sponge it on them? Then paint the brick fireplace white.
Use this site and play around with colors. Upload a photo and choose different colors. Find a color that appeals to you.

Use an all in one paint and primer. I love hgtv paint, it goes on the walls very nicely.good luck.
Are you wanting to paint over the color or add another color to it? Stenciling might be a good way to add more color. Or color blocking.
Depending on the color you go with, you might want to prime first. Sherwin Williams paint has a good paint and primer that might work without priming. I would also try samples first so that you are happy with the color you choose.
I was going do something like dry brush over it, as I did to a couple of pieces of old furniture, from Habitat in a huge living/dining area. I painted, one aqua, the other orange, and then toned it down with a stiff wide brush and white paint. The rooms they are in are dark, and the millennial grey walls and grey laminate floors don’t help.
But I was looking for something different in the bedroom, which is hung with a lot of old Japanese wood block prints and old wooden Chinese screens,
This is a large bedroom, again, all grey. The one idea that sounds good is a fluffy roller with paint. The pictures are my three projects: paint a color, and then white dry brush them.
