Hello Rita! If you are refinishing a dining room table you can use stain finish poly.
I’d use wipe on poly in satin. Wipe on with the direction of the grain using a lint free rag.
I used a satin poly on mine. Use fine steel wool to scuff between coats. I did 3 and it looks like glass.
