I am in zone 9 in Southern California. Right now with all the fires to the south of me, only 7% humidity. Most of the country can't even fathom that . . . Once you add moisture, the paper falls right off.
Use a commercial liquid stripper - wet a defined smaller area - do another, then another. Come back rewet the first, 2nd etc. Use a 5"-6" broadknife to scrape it off the first section; use a grill scrubber to wash the rest 0f the paste off & rinse. Proceed with the next sections. Another mess saver is to put an opened pile of newspaper nearby to thrown the wall paper on - as they fill, roll them up like a dirty diaper and toss - saves a lot of sticky paper being tracked through the house. The part about defined sections is more mental - you see some success ! The amount of damage depends entirely on the pre that was done at installation.
