How can I paint wood paneling to give it a washed out look?
What is the beat way to paint wood paneling. I would like to give it a washed out effect,with either white or a pale blueish grey?

Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrilyc latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.

It makes a difference if your paneling is real wood or "picture of wood" (which most is). I painted paneled rooms in my previous house by doing as William's instructions but I did sand using my orbital sander first. I did not fill the grooves and found the walls looked nice with the obvious planks. It would me crazy to try to make 4 walls smooth lol!
