I use the scented toilet tank drop in cleaner, scented handsoaps, and sometimes a plug in oil diffuser in my boys bathroom. Also, avoid having them put dirty clothes in the bathroom for any length of time.

Make them sit on the toilet.
Make them clean the floor of their bathroom with Chlorox wipes.
I went through this phase with the boys and even at 4 years old, they immediately understood the cause and effect.
Soak the base of the toilet seat in men’s shaving cream. It eliminates urine odor!
I second the men's shaving cream for cleaning and removing the urine smell. Don't have any throw rugs that are in spray distance. Add a bowl disinfectant that stays all the time. Perhaps even add a scentsy type warmer that either plugs in or sits on a shelf/counter.
Make them clean it under your supervision. They will learn very quickly. I did this and it worked like a charm. At the time I was working 60 - 70 hours a week with a 4 hour a day commute. Spending Saturday scrubbing all the bathrooms in the house, was not going to happen without help. They now all know how to clean, cook, do laundry, basic gardening, how to iron and sew buttons. Start young, be patient and your life will be much easier. And their future wives / partners will thank you.
