Measure the head of your bed. Get a piece of 1" plywood that is 4' x 8' and have it cut to your measurement. This means your "headboard" will be up to 4' over the top of your bed at its highest point. You'll need two 2"x4"s to use as legs for the headboard. You'll want to measure the height of your bed (it varies according to mattress thickness) and add a couple of feet to the measurement so you can attach the "headboard" piece. Drill holes for using screws to attach the legs to the back of the headboard piece. Draw the shape you want for the top of the headboard on the plywood. Use a jig saw to cut the shape out but remember, the more turns it has, the more difficult it will be to cover. Sand the edges. Use adhesive spray to "glue" on foam or quilt batting to the front over the top and sides of the back. Then use the same spray adhesive to glue on your fabric choice on the front. Bring it over the top and sides, turn under the raw edge, and use a staple gun to attach it to the back side of the headboard. Then use the staple gun and another piece of material to cover the back side if you want a more finished look.
