Driveway & Sidewalk Deicer
You can sprinkle rock salt or cat litter.
You can also put ashes on the ice from you fireplace if you have one.
Mix together 1 cup of alcohol with 2 cups of water. Then add a quarter-cup of Dawn dish soap. You can put this solution on ice to melt it. If you put it on the sidewalk before it gets ice, it will not prevent ice from happening like salt does.
Hi Mary, this may help you,
SIDEWALK ICE MELT: For icy steps and sidewalks in freezing temperatures, mix 1 teaspoon of Dawn dish washing liquid, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1/2 gallon hot/warm water and pour over walkways. They won't refreeze. No more salt eating at the concrete in your sidewalks.
I will try it
Canadian Prairies here. I sprinkle kid's play sand over ice. Salt is bad for both concrete and asphalt. Not sure about Deb K's suggestion for really cold weather as really hot water might cause damage going on super cold surfaces like we get up here.
