Spray paint is probably your best option. There are several special effects paints. I like the spray paint that looks like granite.
Spray paint will work the best. Just use the kind for the material the lamp is made of.
I like to restore old lamps for my clients, lots of old 60s ones in my history. I like the Model Master's tiny spray paint - its super fine, comes in a zillion colors and metallics.
I tape off the electrical head, the cord and anything I want to leave original. I find a box big enough to hold the lamp while being able to turn it around fully. You can paint it a solid color, but I like to layer on fine mists of colors to achieve something unique. Then I spray with a coat of spar varnish.
Some other paints I've used are Rustoleums metallics, the hammered metals.

spray paint!!
I would spray paint after cleaning with alcohol. Make sure to get the type for lamp construction b
I think it might depend on what the lamp is made out of but spray paint is pretty universal.
Spray paint is an easy way to update an old lamp.
