Can you help e find an area rug for my living room?
Hi guys,Well, it's over a year I have been in search of something which quite mundane but which hasn't yet materialized. I would like to add an area rug down in the middle of the living room, adding color, decoration and hiding the nasty looking carpet below.I would like a rug in excellent condition. I don't want a very worn rug. I need a rug to show me the brighter side. I was searching over for the rugs and found a rug store near to my house. But, I haven't bought a rug before and I also don't have any idea about the pricing of those. Can you please help me with some knowledge and some basic information about rugs? Thanks!

Area rugs can be found in many places, home improvement centers, specialty shops, places like Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshals, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. From a carpet store they can make you a rug from carpet by binding it for you - I have had this done several times. There are many rug purchasing guides on line. Here are a few:

Choose a rug that fits your lifestyle and occupants - in my case I have many furry pets and visiting children so shag or furry rugs are out! Difficult to clean.
And use a proper rug pad, makes a world of difference.

I echo Betsy about estate sales. In your area to they have discount stores? We have some in Maine that have great furniture and rug bargains. Don't forget; all rugs (other than runners or door mats) need to be anchored by some furniture. You could also check Craigslist. Some years ago we were in the market for a living room rug which we wanted to have a design, be 9' X 12' and wool. We found the rug at a yard sale. Knelt on it to sniff it and make sure no animal had urinated on it, had it cleaned and have used it since. We paid $100.

I have found some great deals on large rugs on Amazon with free shipping. I purchased a 9 x 12 rug for around 100.00 about a year ago. You want one you can clean easily. I take mine outside on the deck in the summer and clean it with my carpet cleaner and hang it over the railing to dry.

Kristine: I am a "wool rug person" - prefer natural fibers. The best deals that I found have been Safavieh on overstock.com
BTW: You don't need a rug to cover the entire space... just having the front legs of furniture on the rug is just fine!
Basic Knowledge about Rugs:
1.) Fiber Content for cleaning-
Cost-effective Polyolefin and Polypropylene are oleophilic, they love oil-based stains and that buttered popcorn or potato chip oil spot will wick-out and grow. So, it has to be cleaned with degreasing soap in the summer and line dried.
Acrylic is used to emulate wool. It is easily stained with acidic liquids, like wine, coffee and tea. Hydrogen peroxide will clean these, if used right away.
Nylon & polyester should clean the easiest and will tolerate a lot of abuse.
Wool being a natural fiber, should be treated like the investment it is. I would have it professionally cleaned, if you’re uncertain on how to clean it.
2.) Construction- some area rugs are Axminster or truly woven. The price point will reflect this.
Most are tufted, which is sometimes held together with a latex glue backing.
3.) The denser the pile, the longer is will wear.
I would look at buying a remnant and edge binding it myself, with edgebinding tape.

I just went through this Kristine and it was maddening. I get it. I looked online and in local shops. Unfortunately, most times you really need to see a rug in the room to determine what works...Shipping and return shipping were very expensive and held me back for a long time.
I ended up buying (a lot!) of rugs from Home Depot. Great selection. They were all shipped free to me and then I laid them out on the floor, checked them out in the room - because buying online is tricky. Colors are not accurately displayed and touch and smell are hard to gauge. Then, since Home Depot allows free returns to the store, I just brought back what didn't work. They had great sales and the prices were very reasonable. They also had some pretty ones in the store. Hope that helps!
I was shopping for a totally different kind of rug in my kitchen, but you can peek here if you like: https://www.exquisitelyunremarkable.com/2019/11/modern-cottage-style-kitchen-decor.html Good luck!
