Well, I just sprinkle it on at night before bed and vacuum up in morning. Doesn't need to be complicated in order for it to work. I purchase in 15 pound bags at a local warehouse store for about $7.
You can use it straight for a no scent deodorizer or add some essential oils for a scent. 1 Tbsp baking soda with 5-6 drops of essential oils. A good way to administer is to put in a cheese dispenser like restaurants have for parmesan. If you don't have one, poke holes in a clean jar. Then you can shake it around on the carpet.

Hello. Just like the scented commercial carpet shake-on powders, it can be applied and vacuumed away after some time has allowed the baking soda to absorb odors. Overnight might be the best idea.
A dollar store cheese shaker might be helpful for easy and effective application.
