I think that it can help to start with a little color theory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LLXnUdUIc
Think about the colors you have in the room that you want to paint and what might look good with your existing furniture and color scheme. Then get some paint sample chips and take them home to see how they hold up in the actual room. Maybe tape them to your wall and see how you feel about them after a week or so of living with them.
I always go 1 shade lighter than the actual color that I like. If I don't, I usually end up adding white paint to the color I picked to make it lighter! So yes, I'd say that is true, to go 1 shade lighter. Remember, you're painting a whole room, all the walls. So those itty bitty swatches are so hard to go by, it never looks the same on the wall as the swatch, hardly ever, it's usually always a tad darker.
As for myself, I'm re-painting my living room, and I've decided on a dark color that I like, but I'm going for the shade lighter. Because I know paint always dries darker, and it'll look like the actual color that I really want. So, tips, 1] paint dries darker, 2] go for 1 shade lighter than what you originally picked out 3] if you do the shade lighter, and start painting then decide it's too light, you can always make paint darker at the paint store. 4] you could go with the color you like, and add white to it if it is too dark, but it sometimes doesn't turn out properly.
These will help you.

You have some excellent suggestions here. I always narrow the field from the paint chip samples and then purchase sample sizes of the paint. Then apply to walls of the room you wish to paint. Live with it a week or so to see in all types of light. Then pick your favorite, or start over.
I would highly advise to purchase samples before you paint. I paint a 2' square on the wall and wait 3-4 days to see if it's the color I want. That gives it time to cure.
My best advice is a neutral color. Shades of white, grey, and beige. There is also a series that is considered greige, somewhere between grey & beige. This will allow you to change decor without re painting.
if you tell me bit more info I would try to help. It all depends what room that is ..what you are trying to achieve ..what is the color of your current furniture and if you are happy with it ... etc ...I could ask you more questions.... I would say usually paint color should just be ... should always accommodate, complement what you already have
Go off something you like in the room a pillow a color the couch then go from there if you have. A gray couch then maybe a light gray wall with a accent color wall maybe blue then add blue items around the room to match.
Hello,
Please upload some photos of the room and the furniture to be accommodated within it. Whether it is a warm room or a cold room. If you are starting from scratch, then choose a colour you love and use that for the walls or make the walls neutral and splash the colour you love about within the furnishings! Hope that is a some help!
