How do I clean wooden deck before staining?
I need to clean my wooden deck so I can put stain on it. Do I need to put a sealer on it? I was planning to pressure wash it and then put on stain. It is weathered now.

I used a broom to remove stains that the pressure washer was not removing. Sometimes there are some stubborn spots. I did not use a sealer and I do not recommend Thompson's. It peels and I don't know too many that like it.
I was really happy with Behr’s mold & deck cleaner in a big bucket and a long handled scrub brush on an old neglected deck.
Then I used Behr’s second best opaque deck stain (ranked the best by Consumer Reports) and worked it in to the old cracked wood.
Two full coats. It covered the old stain color and the new fresh wood to look nice and uniform.

Use a deck cleaner to clean the deck. Then use a pressure washer to rinse. A good UV rated deck stain to finish the job. No sealer or topcoat.
Please don't pressure wash it, you can too easily damage the wood. Use a deck cleaner/brightener and then a good quality stain. You can see how I wrapped up the re-staining of our deck here which will give you tips for yours: https://www.flippingtheflip.com/2018/08/the-deck-redux-part-ii-plus-related.html
Hello Pamela,
You could spray it with Wet and Leave, which will clear all the moss or gunk over a few days. Then use a good preservative wood/deck coloured treatment. It will be worth it in the end

Power wash it or get a push broom and use a special deck cleaner product that is sold at local hardware stores and clean before staining.
