Installing a Ceiling Light
Hi all,
I recently got a light fixture for the ceiling and found out the wires in my existing system and the new light doesn't match.
The new one has following wires:
- Blue color (label: N) {possible Neutral Wire}
- Brown color (Label: L) {possible Line , phase wire}
- A bare Brass Wire
The old System has 3 Wires:
- Black thick
- Black thick
- Green thin
Can someone please suggest how to map the wirings?
I believe one Brown goes to Black (but which Black)
Bare goes to Green
Please suggest. Thanks
Note: What if i connect the wrong black ones ? What can be the potential issues

Brown goes to solid black. Blue goes to black with white line. Bare goes to green
Question: Did you remove the old light yourself? If so, are you able to look at the old light and remember which wire went to which on the light? This should tell you what to wire to what on the new one.

Did you remove the old fixture? If you did do you remember how it was wired? In the new photos what you say is green wire looks more like white insulation. You may need a tester to determine which black wire is hot.
Normal convention is Black = hot, white = neutral, and green or bare = ground. L to black, N to white, ground to ground. If there are multiple black wires they probably go to another light off the same switch.
First buy a small circuit tester. Touch the red wire to one of the black wires and the black wire to the bare copper wire. If it lights up then that black wire is carrying the voltage. If not, it’s the neutral wire. Now test the other black wire the same way. It should be the opposite of the other black wire. In other words, if the other black wire lit the tester then this wire should not. It goes without saying to be careful because you’ll be will be working with a live circuit. You should be able to perform the testing without removing the wire nuts (orange plastic pieces attached to the wires now.
Here’s a link to buy one from Amazon and it’s less than $10. You can also get one from a home improvement center, or perhaps even Walmart. You don’t need to spend the extra money on a multimeter because this tool will be easier to use. You won’t have to try to hold the two wires from the meter, and the meter itself.

BY the look of your photos , the safest way out would be to get the whole house rewired...
Brown is the live wire to live wire bare wire is ground
