Vinegar soaked in steel wool makes a natural weathered stain.
I did this by accident once. LOL. I was trying to sand the piece of furniture and use steel wool but was having a hard time removing the layers of stain since it had seeped into the wood. I came up with the bright idea of using vinegar to see if I could soak that into the wood and remove the stubborn layers of stain....but unfortunately I was dipping the steel wool with the vinegar.
OMG......adding to my frustration in trying to remove all stain and bring it back to the original raw wood, I was staining it darker! It definitely gives a weathered look...which is very popular right now. However, at the time.....the dark grey weathered look was not in. HAHA.
I have never forgotten what vinegar and steel wool does to wood!! The longer the steel wool soaks in the vinegar, the darker the stain will become. Good luck!

You can also go to Home Depot and Lowes and look in the stain section. You will be amazed at how many store bought stains nowadays give the weathered look as well. They also have weathered colors like grey and white. Good luck!

There are stains that show the grain thru the wood. Try a light grey from Minwax. Use a very small amount on a rag and wipe on the wood. You and also use acrylic paint and water it down. Try first on pieces of scrap wood.
Water down the white paint then wipe quickly after painting. Reapply until you get the coverage you desire.
Hello Al,
Try watered down matt paint!
All kinds of ways from other Hometalkers.

Paint the piece with watered-down white or pale grey paint until you get the piece looking as you want. If all fails, you can scrub the paint off and start fresh. Ony you can decide whether it's the look you have in your mind.
We whitewashed boards with various amounts of water to create this look. I used cream and grey left over paint and added 25 to 50 % water until I achieved the look I wanted. https://www.alifeunfolding.com/blog-1/2018/8/3/adding-coastal-vibes-to-master-bedroom?rq=rustic%20coastal
