You can use latex paint in a satin or semi-gloss finish. Be sure to lightly sand to give the paint some 'tooth' to stick. Use a primer and then 2 coats of paint.

Hello. There is the chalk paint and milk paint recent phenomenon that is often used on furniture...and they too have different properties and finishes. Chalk paint is particularly popular. Have you considered Chalk paint?
I favor the Rustoleum products, their products and support are fabulous. Perhaps it might be available in a color —that you like?

I’m about to do the same thing I will first lightly sand down the top of the table to get to the fresh new wood.then wipe of dust . Then eather stain it or paint it or use a penatrating stain that has color and you could see through it to the wood grain realy comes through after the stain is dry put some varnish on the table top .good luck .

Chalk paint is easy and fun. Rustoleum brand is great as is their top coat. However, if you plan to use it everyday and wipe it off often. The most durable paint is oil based. Or oil based polyeureathane over chalk paint or latex.
