Any tips on painting a shed?

What is your shed made from Lisa? What are you planning to use for paint/stain?

We just completed this project a few weeks ago.

Power washing the shed and letting it dry completely might be necessary. We stained this cedar shed in a couple hours with brush on transparent stain.

Yes, wash/clean the shed before painting it. The first coat absorbs lots of paint, the second coat may not look like it does much but definitely worth it. Consider cleaning the inside as well if it's an older shed. I sanded the floors and oiled them. Made a huge difference. If you have irrigation system make sure it doesn't run while paint is drying.

Make sure surface is dry and clean. May need to scrape and/or sand. If it is un painted wood then you may stain it. If it has been previously painted or stained, then you will need to paint it. Good Luck

Hi Lisa, lightly sand it to remove any loose paint or pieces, clean it, let it dry and mask off anything you don't want to get paint on. Decide which method you will apply the paint with, personally, I like roller or brush for exterior items, you are close enough to see that no spots have bee missed, and with roller and brush you don't worry about over spray on surrounding items. Usually 2 coats letting it dry completely between coats. Pick colors you love and go for it!

Go to the paint store and tell them the material it is made of. I just did mine it is concrete block, thus I purchased a masonry paint. Paint for wood and vinyl is different. Ask at the counter.

Metal or wooden? Peeling issues? In general it needs to be clean and dry. Wood must be cured to adhere. Use a good primer and don’t cheap out in the paint. I’ve had best luck with Benjamin Moore from Ace on exterior. Bad luck with behr.

Hi Lisa. Start with a clean surface. Power washing may be beneficial. But be sure it is completely dry before painting. Use a quality outdoor paint, hopefully one that has a primer in it. Use old newspaper or an old sheet to place on the ground all around the shed. Then cut with a brush and then use a roller for the rest. Good luck Lisa.
