Cicada Wasps not going away so far. Now what?
My backyard is infested with huge, 1 1/2” long fat cicada wasps that live in holes in the ground.
Ive quit mowing my grass short to make it hard for them to find their nests.
Ive donned bee-keeper’s netting and sprayed wasp killer in the holes I could find.
I can’t find all the holes. It’s impossible.
Thinking of a drop spreader & granular insect killer- but the chances of the granules getting in random holes are slim to none.
My back patio is now the setting of their drive bombs at people and the house.

There are ready to use applications by Ortho, using a pump sprayer. Alternatively, spray Permethrin in early morning, using a tank sprayer, every 2-3 weeks.
so sorry this is happening to you- you are brave to try to tackle this yourself

We are headed into the height of their burrowing activity, which begins to wane in mid August or so. From what I have read, they do not like moist soil. I would set up a sprinkler and run it in the am and pm to keep the soil moist, so they move on. They are not aggressive and only sting when threatened even though they look terrifying.
Broadcasting poison has been proven not to work well and will kill everything, even beneficial insects, which will throw any balance off and create other problems.
I think driving them off to another area is the most practical answer, or you'll be dealing with an onslaught of cicadas in the years to come.
You might try this Spectracide Professional spray. It was the only thing that works when we were infested. Even burning gas didn't get rid of mine.

Mine don’t make an obvious nest, just a hole, flush with the ground. Very hard to find them.
