Concrete Slab for Shed?

My husband and I built a shed last summer. We dug out the foundation, added gravel and then poured concrete. We now want to build an extension, can we build a frame and add the gravel and concrete in the frame without digging down several inches? There is a large tree at the back end of where the workshop will be. The extension would then be a step up. Is this possible?

    Laura,

You need to excavate out at least the top soil to prevent the whole slab from settling over time. As much work as it's going to be, get as close to 4 inches of gravel base below grade as you can, even if the slab itself will be above grade. You can set your form above grade, but you will need to make sure it will be strong enough to contain the concrete until it cures. I am assuming you will pour at least 3.5 inches of concrete. Also consider the possibility of having to take the tree down in the future for some reason and removing the stump. Will continued growth of the tree impact the shed? Will the roofline of the new section match the existing section? If you have a 4 inch step up, can you afford to lose that much headroom? If the new section will have a higher roofline, consider offsetting the new section or creating an L, moving it away from the tree.

Here are some photos. When I built my shed extension to my garage I built a wood frame over concrete blocks and 3/4" plywood for the floor. What you want to do is possible.

You should be able to as long as you can frame and pour it thick enough to support the weight. As long as you don’t mind the step, you should be fine.

Hi! You should be able to. It just needs to be deep and thick enough for the weight of the structure. Good luck!

  • I would consider the fact that the tree and drainage could cause settling issues on the concrete. We've had issues lately with our patio settling and cracking and repairing it is a nightmare.

Hi Laura, you can use those cement blocks for decking to accomplish this, build a deck the same height, or dig down and use this as a form, using less blocks and and less wood
