Add stair railings

Any ideas to inexpensively add some sort of stable railings to indoor steps would be appreciated!

Carla,

Do you need just a bannister or railing with balusters? Where are the railings located and do they have to look good, fitting in with the architecture of your home? A picture would be helpful to better assess your needs. The expense depends on the materials and your level of skill. A simple banister is not very expensive and easy to do. Railing and blusters more expensive and more difficult. Here are a couple of youtubes to get you started.

Can you add to the wall? That would be the easiest and least expensive.

Do you need railing (hand rail) or the balusters (the spindles)? If you have a solid wall Home Depot sells hand rails and brackets that screw to the wall. You can also buy balusters there to replace old ones.

For balusters you could use electrical conduit pipe. Comes in 10' lengths. Paint the conduit. You could buy 8' lengths of 2X2's. Cut them to length. Cheaper than new balusters. Even 2X4's would work. Paint or stain. Just make sure the gap between them is 5' or less.

You could look to the ADA (Americans with Disability Act) for what they offer as far as ideas for a sturdy rail. It may or may not go with your decor, but could be painted.
