Can compost attract bad insects and if so what are they?

KMS Woodworks on Jul 31, 2012I've seen compost bins that worked great and others that were smelly messes crawling with all manner of maggots and such. Ideally a compost bin generates enough heat to deter insects...the main composting action being microbial. Vermi bins are another alternative Here is a great article by one of our Hometalk members http://www.networx.com/article/rectifying-stinky-compostHelpful Reply

LaWinda M on Jul 31, 2012Thanks but I don't have a problem with odor. I just saw some little critters that looked like grubs. So I wasn't sure if they are a good composter or not.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Aug 01, 2012If your compost is working right and warm enough, you shouldn't have grubs, LaWinda.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Aug 01, 2012You need a balance of greens and browns...and a certain amount of moisture, One trick to measure the pile is with a compost thermometer http://www.amazon.com/Clean-Air-Distributing-G20P-Thermometer/dp/B003UVI6KC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343832875&sr=8-3&keywords=composting+thermometerHelpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Aug 02, 2012You can probably get your compost pile back in shape by adding more greens or browns until you get the proportion to about two parts green to one part brown.Helpful Reply
